Periodontal disease is marked by the breakdown of structures that surround secure, and support teeth. These structures include the jawbones, gums, and fibers which anchor the teeth to the gums. Periodontal disease is usually a result of untreated plague buildup, and is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. However, regular checkups and a strong home care regimen easily prevent periodontal disease.

In our office, we use Arestin, a locally administered antibiotic in adjunct to scaling and root planning. Arestin is easily and painlessly placed below the gumline to aid in treating the bacterial infection of periodontal disease. For more information, please refer to

After treatments are administered it is very important to maintain good periodontal health. Your dental healthcare team may recommend 3, 4 or 6 months recall appointments that must be followed.

Effective homecare based on proper brushing, flossing and rinsing to ensure successful plaque control is also important in maintaining healthy gums and teeth. In some cases a referral to a periodontist, a gum specialist, is needed.
